Caption:
Railway viaduct over Monsal Dale, 19 April 1893. The viaduct was on the extension of the Midland Railway, from Rowsley to New Mills.
When the viaduct was constructed, many people, including John Ruskin, complained that it destroyed the beauty of the valley. However, the railway has now closed and Monsal Dale is now a popular beauty spot.
The viaduct now carries a cycleway and footpath.
